A little more about me...

My name is Poppy Jacobs, and I'm an aspiring journalist and radio presenter from Northamptonshire, England. 

I am undertaking my final year studying Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Birmingham, and hold the position of News Editor for the student newspaper, Redbrick. 

I have also been fortunate enough to study at The University of Alabama in the United States, where I focused my time on journalism classes and secured a position in the Alabama Public Radio newsroom. 

I have a particular interest in political news and current affairs and am hoping to pursue a career in journalism post-university. I'm also an avid traveller and would love a career that would award me that freedom.

My Experience:

Redbrick News Editor & (News) Social Media:

Currently hold an editor position for a team of nearly 50 news writers, covering local and national news, and editing and uploading up to 15 stories per week in WordPress, alongside my studies. UK Media Law trained. 

Create weekly ops lists for writers, run frequent news writing workshops and mentor new writers in my free time.

Compose the monthly print section for news using Adobe InDesign Suite, including selecting articles for print (including the front page) to create a varied and relevant section for readers.

Write frequently for the news section, as well as occasionally composing opinion pieces on a variety of political and current affairs.

Additionally, work to create aesthetic and engaging content to draw readers Instagram to our website, as well as promote society events.

Burn FM Radio Presenter - Formula 1:

Used Myriad and Reaper systems to produce a weekly radio show on Formula 1 sporting news. 

Created informative and accessible content to engage listeners, catering to an audience with a spectrum of prior knowledge.

Efficiently gathered and compiled reports, and media updates and developed performance analysis in order to produce a current and educated account of recent sporting events.

Coordinated with co-hosts when scheduling guests and organizing features and music to ensure a smooth and professional program.

    Alabama Public Radio - News Internship:

    Worked as part of a small team to produce over 60% of the newsroom content for Alabama Public Radio web, as well as a large portion of their daily radio stories.

    Pitched and produced feature content for radio and web on topical national news.

    Experience with Adobe Audition and familiar with the Associated Press styleguide

    Worked on tight deadlines when arranging, preparing and executing interviews in order to produce relevant, newsworthy content for readers.

    Prioritized effectively to ensure cut and copy and web scripts for important stories were completed in a timely manner.

    Developed a strong working relationship with the newsroom team, as well as editors, to utilize our shared contacts and develop new angles and ideas.

      Social & Social Media Secretary - University Sports Club:

      Generate unique, engaging content to attract users and promote upcoming events alongside my studies. 

      Write copy for social posts, ensuring 100% grammatical accuracy.

      Coordinate with the marketing team to identify and form collaborations with brands suited to our organisation

      Curated content across multiple social channels to ensure a clear and cohesive online club identity.

      Organised social events focused on teambuilding and community.
